The Unrun Sea
Overview
The Unrun Sea is the open ocean that lies seaward of every known water on the far side of Caeldon: past the farthest current roads of The Tidebound Reaches, past the outer isles of The Tidelace Coasts, and past the fog banks off The Soundchain Roads. The name is a Thaluren way of speaking. A run is a path laid and witnessed by those who swim it, and no run has ever been laid through this water.
It has no shore anyone has charted and no border anyone has drawn. Its near edge is simply where every office stops: no Returning Concord witness answers for it, and no harbour of The Gaugeward Leagues claims water past its last beacon.
What Happened Here
Nothing that anyone recorded, and that is the point. The peoples on its edge each have their own reason to stay out, and their own reason to distrust what little comes back.
The Thaluren live for the return, and their faith, The Way of Return, asks only whether a return is lawful. A run that does not come home is not a run, and their law has nothing to say about water that leads nowhere they can lawfully reach again. The Outer-Route lines go farthest, and their memory keeps runs that pressed past the known roads and came back late, scattered, or not at all. What those who did return could tell was seen by too few to be witnessed, and in Thaluren law an unwitnessed account carries no standing.
Gnome pilots will not enter water they cannot read, and open sea cannot be re-sounded or marked. The few craft driven past the last beacon by storm or fog have come home with readings no second craft could confirm, and the sounding houses do not enter them in their ledgers: precise and true are not the same word. The coastal Humans of the Tidelace fish close inshore in small open boats, and their tales say nothing of what lies beyond the sea.
What Is Known
Very little, and most of it is memory.
-
The Far Set. The outermost current road the Thaluren know, ridden by Outer-Route runs on their long way home. It is marked by nothing but memory, and the water beyond it is the Unrun Sea.
-
The Long Grey. The great fog belt of the outer Tidelace rolls in off this water with little warning and can shut the outer roads for days. Storms off the same water break current roads and scatter runs.
-
The deep-witnesses. Thaluren ocean memory places great whale-like witnesses in the deep. They are honoured without being prayed to, and an Outer-Route run that has seen one at a distance tells of it for generations.
-
The devourers. The same memory places squid-like devourers out here that break routes. A current road where a devourer has been sensed is not trusted until a later run has come through it whole.
What Is Not Known
Almost everything is deliberately left open: where the Unrun Sea ends and what lies across it; how deep it goes and what lies on its floor; whether islands or other shallows break it anywhere; what the deep-witnesses and devourers actually are, and whether anyone has met one closely and lived to say so; whether any god holds it, since Maris of the Tides is honoured on the Tidelace as a guardian of the deep but draws her strength from the coast; and whether any of the lost Outer-Route runs found water to live in.
