What Are The Harmonics

The Harmonics are the abstract, conceptual realms of the cosmos. They are planes of pure force and idea, less dense than the Anchors and more fluid in their nature. Where the Anchors are defined by physical matter and stable physics, the Harmonics are defined by the fundamental concepts that underpin reality.

The Harmonics serve as the conceptual source code of the universe. They are not engines that create energy from nothing; they are vast access gradients where existing cosmic energies become sorted, intensified, transferred, and made intelligible. They formed after the earliest Prime awakenings as long-stabilizing mediating structures that relieved direct tension between the Primes. They later became the foundations upon which the physical laws of the Anchors are built.

The earliest large-scale sorting of reality was driven mainly by the elemental Harmonics. As more Primes awakened and more Harmonics stabilized, the abstract Harmonics increasingly sharpened, specialized, and polarized that same developing cosmic field. This is one of the reasons the later deficit and surplus planes express both material extremes and conceptual extremes.

Key Properties

All Harmonics share certain characteristics:

  • Conceptual Nature: They are not made of matter. They are made of the concept they represent. The Crucible is not "a place with fire"; it is the concept of Fire given form.

  • Inexhaustible Access: Each Harmonic behaves like an inexhaustible conceptual reservoir from a mortal perspective, but this does not violate conservation. Drawing on a Harmonic accesses, redirects, converts, or concentrates an existing cosmic force rather than creating new energy from nothing.

  • Abstraction: They are difficult for mortal minds to comprehend directly. Visiting a Harmonic is not like visiting a city; it is like stepping inside an idea.

  • Connection to the Primes: Each Harmonic is associated with at least one Prime and represents a stabilized pattern of Prime interaction rather than a source from which a Prime emerged.

The Relationship Between Harmonics and Anchors

The Harmonics and Anchors exist in a symbiotic relationship, governed by the Resonance Principle.

The Flow of Concept into Matter

The Harmonics bleed into the Anchors, providing the conceptual foundations for physical reality:

  • The Crucible provides the concept of Energy, which manifests as heat, fire, and transformation in the Anchors.

  • The Surging Deep provides the concept of Flow, which manifests as water, blood, and biological processes.

  • The Iron Backbone provides the concept of Structure, which manifests as stone, bone, and physical stability.

Without this bleed, the Anchors would be formless voids. The Harmonics give shape to matter.

The Resonance Principle

When a Harmonic bleeds into an Anchor, it forms a Resonance (Tier 3). This is not a full merging or an act of energy creation, but a localized interaction:

  • Dreams occur when the Dreaming Veil resonates with the Material Plane.

  • Lightning occurs when The Crucible resonates with the Material Plane’s atmosphere.

  • Hauntings occur when The Whispering Trace resonates with the Material Plane through a location.

If the bleed is too strong or too sustained, a Resonant Zone forms: a permanent or semi-permanent pocket where the Harmonic overwrites the local physics of the Anchor.

The Gradient of Influence

The influence of a Harmonic on an Anchor is not uniform. It varies based on:

  • Proximity in the Veil: Some Anchors are "closer" to certain Harmonics in the Veil network, making bleed more likely.

  • Environmental Alignment: A volcano is naturally aligned with the Crucible, making it a hotspot for fire-related Resonances.

  • Mortal Activity: Rituals, worship, and magical practices can strengthen or weaken the connection between a specific Harmonic and the Material Plane.

The Ten Harmonics

The Harmonics are divided into two broad categories based on the nature of the concepts they embody: the Elemental Harmonics and the Abstract Harmonics.

Inter-Harmonic Relationships

The Harmonics do not exist in isolation. They interact, conflict, and cooperate in ways that shape the cosmos.

Complementary Pairs

Some Harmonics naturally amplify each other when they interact, usually by improving transfer, conversion, or stability rather than by producing energy from nothing:

  • The Crucible + The Unbound Gale: Fire and wind. Together, they drive storms, wildfires, and the spark of inspiration.

  • The Surging Deep + The Iron Backbone: Water and earth. Together, they shape soil, rivers, and the foundations of life.

  • The Dreaming Veil + The Shifting Path: Imagination and possibility. Together, they enable prophecy, innovation, and the vision of what could be.

  • The Binding Song + The Eternal Record: Language and memory. Together, they preserve history, formalize law, and stabilize knowledge.

Oppositional Pairs

Some Harmonics naturally resist or negate each other:

  • The Crucible vs. The Frozen Moment: Energy versus stasis. Fire melts ice; time extinguishes flame. Their intersection creates unstable Resonant Zones where time and heat fluctuate wildly.

  • The Unbound Gale vs. The Iron Backbone: Motion versus structure. Wind erodes stone; stone blocks wind. Their intersection creates zones of grinding friction and geological instability.

  • The Dreaming Veil vs. The Radiance (via Resonance): Illusion versus truth. Dreams obscure; the Radiance reveals. Their intersection creates zones of paradoxical clarity and confusion.

The Triads

Three Harmonics working in concert can produce complex phenomena:

  • The Crucible + The Surging Deep + The Iron Backbone: Energy, flow, and structure. This triad sustains life as the intersection of metabolism, fluidity, and physical form.

  • The Dreaming Veil + The Binding Song + The Shifting Path: Imagination, language, and possibility. This triad enables prophecy, the articulation of possible futures.

  • The Whispering Trace + The Eternal Record + The Frozen Moment: Death, memory, and stasis. This triad enables undeath by preserving a postmortem Pattern remnant beyond its natural release.

The Harmonics and the Deficit-Surplus Axis

Each Harmonic has a natural affinity for certain Anchor planes, and an aversion to others. This affinity determines where Resonant Zones are most likely to form and which Harmonics the inhabitants of each Anchor can most easily access.

Accessing the Harmonics

Direct Access

Traveling directly to a Harmonic is extremely dangerous for mortals. The abstract nature of these planes can overwhelm the physical body and mind:

  • The Crucible: Visitors may be incinerated by concentrated energy.

  • The Surging Deep: Visitors may drown in the concept of flow.

  • The Iron Backbone: Visitors may be crushed by the weight of structure.

  • The Unbound Gale: Visitors may be scattered by the force of motion.

Indirect Access (Via Resonant Zones)

The safest way to interact with a Harmonic is through a Resonant Zone in the Material Plane. These zones provide a buffer between the abstract concept and the physical world, allowing mortals to experience and conduct the Harmonic’s energy without being overwhelmed.

Magical Access

Mages draw upon the Harmonics to fuel their spells:

  • Internal Resonance: The mage uses their own body as a conduit, at high personal cost.

  • Environmental Siphoning: The mage draws ambient energy from the environment, making access location-dependent.

  • Harmonic Conduction: The mage opens a microscopic tear to a Harmonic using a conduit, requiring tools and risking backlash. This conducts and reshapes existing energy; it does not create energy from nothing.
