The Windscar Expanse
Overview
The Windscar Expanse is a broad far-side macro-region of dry uplands and interior basins on Caeldon, lying outside the cradle-web of Elderweald, Ironspine, Confluence, and Roothollow history. It is one of the first named signs that Caeldon is a whole planet rather than one crowded contact zone.
It is country of exposed breadth, wind pressure, escarpments, and long distances: open uplands, hard seasonal margins, interior drainage basins with salt or dust floors, cliff-bound transitions, and a few sparse but strategically vital corridors of survivable passage. It is desert-adjacent rather than true desert. What defines it is not dense entanglement between many peoples but scale, separation, and the difficulty of keeping life, memory, and movement coherent across stretched, harsh ground.
Its primary people are the Orcs, and its civilizational order is The Windscar Pacts, first treated in The Founding of the Windscar Pacts. Its scouring wind is the god Rakhal the Storm-Caller, who breaks whatever has gone stale, and its clans keep their lineages, honour, and dead under Ushkar the Ancestor-Warden.
Subregions
The Expanse is not one flat harsh-land block. Its full regional treatment lives in its two subregions:
-
The Rimward Basins: the anchored basin-rim country of defended wells, rim settlements, and seasonal concentration, where the Pacts find their fixed gravity.
-
The High Scars: the exposed escarpment country of crossings, warning lines, escort obligation, and treaty-ground legitimacy, where movement itself is the central political fact.
Together they explain how the Windscar sustains both strongholds and movement without collapsing into either. The strain between them surfaces in The Rimward Passage Dispute and is made concrete at The Oath Cistern.
Beyond the Expanse’s edges:
-
Inland lies The Glassbelt Interior, a true desert of salt flats, heat basins, glassed ruin, and rarer water that Windscar escorts cross with caution.
-
Beside it lie the sheltered terraces of The Leeward Folds, whose Halfling reserve law the Pacts first meet in The Leeward-Windscar Terms.
-
Coastward lie The Tidelace Coasts, reached through The Tidelace-Windscar Approaches and, later, the Windscar-facing exchange corridor of The Soundchain Roads.
Shared Character
Whatever the subregion, Windscar country answers dangerous distance the same way: by making movement legible and answerable. Passage across it is held by pact, not by walls. Escort is an obligation as much as a trade, water and pasture are shared under negotiated rights, treaty-grounds are meant to host meetings without false shelter, and broken passage is answered with credible force rather than random violence. The full shape of that order belongs to The Windscar Pacts.
