Varn the Shadow-Stalker
Origins and Birth
Varn the Shadow-Stalker was born from the collective fear and desperation of those who hide in The Broken Marches.
The Marches are a ruin-belt of failed works and broken roads, and their culverts, service tunnels, root cellars, and ruined storeworks have always sheltered people that settled power wanted found. Goblins without a warrant, whose holdings were declared waste-ground and whose standing could be revoked whenever a lord wanted a ruin cleared, learned there to live unseen. Later, fugitive Wrought came, escaping the Unmakers who would destroy or "correct" them, and the owners who still called them property. With them came debtors, deserters, and anyone else power was hunting.
They did not pray for a hero to lead them into battle; they prayed for invisibility. They begged for "shadows that hide us," for "a guardian who strikes from the dark," and for "a path that no hunter can follow." They needed a god who understood that survival sometimes meant becoming part of the night.
A people living by concealment and escape drew Umbra into predatory precision. Varn arose as lethal, silent agility, preserving hiddenness as both shield and strategy. His cult is older than the Wrought, but their prayers since The Awakening of the Wrought have made him sharper.
Appearance and Presence
Varn appears as a figure of fluid, predatory grace, blending seamlessly into the darkness.
-
Visuals: He is a lithe, athletic figure whose form seems to be made of living shadow, constantly shifting and rippling like smoke. He wears a cloak of woven night-silk that absorbs light, making him nearly invisible in low light. His face is obscured by a hood, but two points of pale, silver light burn where his eyes should be: sharp, alert, and unblinking. He moves without sound, his feet seeming to glide over the ground rather than touch it.
-
The Atmosphere: In places where he moves, the air becomes cool and still. The sounds of the road and the ruin fade into a hush. Birds stop singing. The wind seems to die. The shadows lengthen and deepen, becoming tangible and soft to the touch.
-
The Voice: His voice sounds like dry leaves skittering over stone or the whisper of wind through a broken wall. It is barely audible, yet impossible to ignore. He speaks in short, urgent commands. "Hide." "Wait." "They are coming."
Powers and Abilities
Varn does not fight in the open; he controls the ground. He does not reveal; he conceals.
-
The Step-Through: He can move instantly from one shadow to another, bypassing physical barriers and appearing behind enemies.
-
Mechanism: He dissolves into the shadows and reforms elsewhere, traveling through the "network" of darkness.
-
Cost: He cannot step through areas of bright, direct light. He is vulnerable to illumination.
-
-
The Night-Vision: He can see perfectly in total darkness and detect hidden enemies, traps, or magical wards.
-
Mechanism: He perceives the warmth and the magical signatures of living things, seeing them as glowing outlines against the dark.
-
Cost: Bright light blinds him temporarily, causing him pain and disorientation.
-
-
The Shadow-Strike: He can manifest a weapon of pure shadow (a dagger, a spear, a whip) that strikes from the darkness, bypassing physical armor.
-
Mechanism: The weapon is an extension of his will, formed from the ambient shadow.
-
Cost: The strike is silent and unseen, but it can only be used against those who are unaware or distracted. If the target is alert, the weapon may miss or be blocked.
-
-
The Cloak of Shadows: He can wrap a living being in a layer of shadow, making them invisible, silent, and undetectable to those who would do them harm.
-
Mechanism: He projects a field of darkness around the target, masking their presence.
-
Cost: The target must remain still and silent. If they move or speak, the cloak breaks. Also, Varn feels the target’s fear and anxiety, which can be draining.
-
Current Status: The Hunter in the Marches
Varn is active and powerful, but he is constantly engaged.
-
The Threat: The hunts never fully stop. Unmaker circles are hidden and few, but they keep a long memory of the Wrought who escaped them. Lords revoke warrants to clear ruins for salvage, and the Goblins living in those ruins are driven out. Bounty-takers follow debts and grudges into the tunnels with lamps, fire, and dogs. Varn strikes at the hunters who come too close, and leaves the rest to lose their way.
-
The Dilemma: Varn is torn between protecting the hidden and hunting the hunters. If he reveals himself to save one group, he may expose the hiding places of others. If he stays hidden, the ones being hunted may be taken. He is always looking for ways to turn the hunters aside without betraying where anyone sleeps.
-
The Burden: Varn feels the fear and pain of everyone he hides. The constant vigilance is exhausting, and he is beginning to show signs of "shadow-fatigue": his form becoming slightly translucent, his movements less fluid.
Relationships with Other Entities
-
With Umbra Prime: Varn is a protective expression of Umbra’s nature, embodying the "space between" and the "trace" aspects of the Prime. Umbra is pleased with his stewardship but worries that he is becoming too aggressive, risking his own dissolution in the light.
-
With Ennor the Grave-Watcher (Umbra): Close allies. Ennor guides the dead; Varn protects the living. The hunted who die in hiding are often buried where no hunter will find them, and Ennor keeps watch over the graves Varn keeps secret.
-
With Ostrin the Lantern-Bearer (Lux): Natural rivals, though their worshippers rarely meet. Ostrin represents exposure; Varn represents concealment. Ostrin holds that power hidden from view is power that answers to no one; Varn knows that for the hunted, being seen is being taken. They respect each other’s ends while distrusting each other’s methods.
-
With Corrow the Gale-Runner (Zephyr): Uneasy allies. The circuits of the Edgeway Kindreds run through the Marches, and both gods care for the same hunted people. Corrow wants them moving; Varn wants them hidden. Some are best hidden and some best moved on, and the two gods rarely agree which.
-
With Tavi the Bard of the Broken (Verba): Natural partners. Varn gives the unwarranted cover; Tavi gives them song. The Goblin songs of struck warrants are often sung in places only Varn’s worshippers can find.
Legacy and Echoes
Varn is a living legend in the Broken Marches.
-
The Hidden Lights: Those who have been hidden leave small lamps in the ruins, shuttered so no hunter can see them, to honour the Stalker. It is said that if the lamps are placed with true gratitude, Varn will keep the giver safe for a year.
-
The Legend of the "Ghost of the Marches": A folk tale tells of a bounty-taker who went into the tunnels after the hidden. Varn appeared and led him into a trap, and he was never seen again. It is a story of justice and the power of the unseen.
-
The Shadow-Tracks: In the deepest culverts and service tunnels of the Marches, there are paths that seem to lead nowhere. Locals say these are the trails of the Stalker, still protecting the hidden.
Travel Notes for Mortals
-
Warning: Do not enter the Marches' tunnels at night without a guide. Do not hunt the hidden. Do not disrespect the shadows.
-
Observation: If you feel a sudden, cool stillness, or if you see a pair of silver eyes in the dark, you may be near the Shadow-Stalker.
-
Action: Stay still. Stay quiet. Trust the shadows.
-
Goal: If you seek Varn’s help, remember: he is a god of secrecy, not of glory. His gift is a shield, not a sword.
