The Tidebound Reaches
Overview
The Tidebound Reaches are the first named homeland field of the Thaluren, a broad ocean-to-river macro-region on the far side of Caeldon, well outside the cradle-web. They are not simply a coast, a reef belt, or an underwater kingdom. Pelagic current roads, shoal worlds, reef settlements, island margins, estuarine thresholds, and lower-to-middle river spawning approaches are bound here into one linked water-world, because Thaluren life belongs to the sea but Thaluren continuity must keep returning through freshwater.
Most Thaluren live their whole ordinary lives at sea and come upriver only to spawn. The Returning Concord holds the field together, not as a state with a border but as a chain of recognized waters in which sea settlements, estuary witnesses, river-ascent custodians, and sanctuary keepers all know one another’s standing. Upriver the runs reach freshwater that is already someone’s home: the tributaries of the Kavari, who give the Reaches a dwelling-water counterpart to Thaluren return-water law. Where the neighbouring Tidelace Coasts reward calibrated harbouring and careful shore-entry, the Reaches reward something else: a return that is lawful in every water it crosses.
Land and Hazards
The Reaches are experienced through movement, timing, and recognized passage rather than fixed borders. Some of their waters are fully marine, others tidal, brackish, seasonal, or fresh, and a Thaluren life passes through all of them.
Seaward lie the current roads: long, steady flows across open water that carry whole settlements' worth of travellers with little effort when they run true. Inside them are the shoal worlds, where reefs break the swell and kelp grows tall enough to shadow the water beneath. The broadest of these forests, the Kelpshade, is where returning runs rest and gather before they turn for the estuaries, and where the young who come back down from the rivers first learn the sea. Island margins give quieter gathering water at their edges. Then come the mouths: estuaries where salt and fresh mix, reed-shelves line the shallows, and the channel shifts with every tide. Beyond the mouths, the rivers climb toward the spawning grounds of the lower and middle courses, with a few rarer sanctified reaches farther inland.
What the waters do to people:
-
Blight. The oldest fear in the Reaches. Eggs laid under proper witness can still fail if the water itself has gone wrong, and the Thaluren learned at The First Nesting Confluence that even the most trusted water can turn. Every sanctuary keeper watches for the first signs.
-
Low and wrong water. A dry season, a silted channel, or a warm, sluggish run can make a river impassable to ascent or fatal to a clutch. The return does not wait for good water; it has to find some.
-
Storms and broken currents. A current road that fails or shifts in a storm season can scatter a run across open water, and late arrival at the mouth carries its own penalties.
-
The deep. Beyond the outermost routes lies open sea the Thaluren do not claim. Their ocean memory speaks of great witnesses there, and of devourers that break routes. Few Thaluren go to look.
-
Being in someone else’s water. Upriver, the hazard is legal as much as physical. A run that presses into Kavari nursery-water without notice can do real harm and incur debt it will carry for generations.
Ordinary Life
Sea life is the ordinary life of the Reaches. Thaluren settlements sit in reef shelter and kelp-shadowed water: submerged or half-sheltered dwellings gathered where the current is gentle and food is close. People fish, gather shellfish, tend the shoals, and travel the current roads to visit kin, settle disputes, or attend an assembly at an island-edge gathering place. Thaluren identity is layered through parent-lines, clutches, hatch-origins, and run-lines, and a stranger is placed by asking which run they came up with and which water they hatched in before anyone asks about their household.
The year turns on the return. As spawning season nears, a settlement’s run gathers along the Kelpshade and the outer shoals, the Clutch-Recognition Circles confirm who is going and in what standing, and messengers swim ahead to give notice at the mouths and upriver. The run then crosses into brackish water under witness, climbs the river on declared timing, and lays its eggs in a recognized spawning ground under the eye of Sanctuary Custodians. Reproduction is public. Nobody spawns alone, and nobody’s clutch is a private matter. Afterwards, adults return to the sea; the young who survive come down later, in their own time, to a settlement that has been waiting for them.
Upriver, the Kavari live year-round in the same river systems. Their rootbank villages, deep pools, gravel runs, and spring-fed side channels are home, food, nursery, and burial ground at once. Bank councils settle access and repair, pool-kin households remember which waters owe what, and nursery custodians clean, turn, shade, and defend the gravel beds where Kavari young grow. For most of the year a Kavari bank village sees no Thaluren at all. In return season it sees notice first, then escorts, and only then, if the water allows it, a run.
Where the two peoples meet, it is usually over a marker. Kavari custodians mark active nursery-water and forbidden channels; Thaluren escorts bring notice and keep within marked limits; disputes go to a custody circle at the water’s edge rather than to anyone’s court.
Peoples and Power
No single centre rules the Reaches. Authority is held by function, and each function answers to the others.
-
The Returning Concord. Its recognized offices are also the sacred offices of the Thaluren faith. Run-Witnesses recognize lawful ascent and remember precedent. Sanctuary Custodians keep the spawning grounds and judge contamination. Clutch-Recognition Circles make descent and adoption publicly legible. Sea-Settlement Speakers carry the voice of the sea settlements, where most Thaluren actually live, into sanctuary questions. Redirection Assemblies, once rare emergency bodies, now decide whether a blocked or damaged run may lawfully pass into other water.
-
The two branches. The Blightward Custodies hold the closed and damaged waters: inspection, quarantine, blight memory, and the names of failed clutches. The Open-Run Concords hold the alternate channels and lesser sanctuaries: route recognition, clutch-transfer testimony, and the seasonal review that turns an emergency passage into an accepted one. Both claim to be the faithful heir of the same older law.
-
The Kavari. The Bankright Circles hold the dwelling-waters upriver through bank councils, pool-kin circles, nursery custodians, channel stewards, and seasonal gathering courts. In active nursery-water, their closure rights override any passage claim, and they have never needed Thaluren recognition to hold them.
-
Gnome witnesses. At the mouths and in some disputed river reaches, Gnome witnesses of The Gaugeward Leagues measure depth, timing, and channel condition. They record; they do not rule.
The Thaluren of the Reaches still sort themselves by older continuities as well: Tidebound lines that keep the inherited runs, Blightward and Open-Run lines that took their names from the closure, and Outer-Route lines whose runs come in from the farthest current roads. Kavari lineages such as Bankright, Gravelbraid, Pool-Kin, and Coldrun are rooted in their own waters in the same way.
Power is contested in predictable directions. Blightward custodians accuse sea settlements of convenience. Open-Run witnesses accuse Blightward custody of lethal reverence and resent how much a Kavari closure can decide about Thaluren lives. Bankright councils fear that every burdened return accepted this season becomes an expectation the next. A Kavari custodian and a Thaluren run-witness can both be entirely right about the same channel.
Neighbours and Borders
The Reaches end where a water stops being part of the return.
-
Seaward: the outer routes and the deep. The farthest current roads are travelled by Outer-Route runs and marked by nothing but memory. Beyond them is the Unrun Sea, open sea that no Thaluren office answers for and that their ocean memory fills with sacred witnesses and route-breaking devourers. This edge was never set by any settlement. It is simply where the known runs stop.
-
Coastward: the Tidelace estuaries. Where the Reaches meet Gnome coast, the line runs through the water rather than along a shore. At The Split Reed Mouth, a mixed estuary between the Reaches and Tidelace-facing waters, The Estuary-Witness Terms (c. 144,000-c. 138,000 BR) fixed the edge: the estuary stays open to calibrated approach and ordinary coastal traffic, protected return-water stays protected inside it, and each closure must say which it protects. Beyond lie the harbour coasts of the Tidelace.
-
Upriver: Kavari dwelling-water. The rivers are shared, and the border between return-water and dwelling-water runs channel by channel. The Gravel Oath Accord (c. 153,000-c. 148,000 BR) drew it at The Gravelbraid Nurseries: a channel may carry both standings, but passage through it needs shared custody first. Above the highest spawning grounds, the tributaries hold Kavari homes and no Thaluren claim at all.
-
Within: the closed water. The Reaches carry a border inside themselves. The First Nesting Confluence has been closed to ordinary return since its closure (c. 178,000-c. 162,000 BR), and Blightward custodians keep watch around it.
-
Landward. Thaluren claims stop at the water’s edge. What lies on the banks beyond the Kavari villages is not Thaluren business, and the Reaches have no land border worth naming.
Roads, Rivers, and Trade
The Reaches' roads are currents and rivers, and almost nothing on them is cargo. What moves is people, clutches, notice, and record.
-
The Homeward Set. The great current road of the Reaches runs from the outer shoals toward the estuaries and carries most runs home in return season. Settlements time their departures by it, and a year when it sets late is remembered as a hard one.
-
The outer routes. Longer, lonelier currents bring Outer-Route runs in from the far edge of the known sea. They arrive last and least predictably.
-
The mouths. At the Split Reed Mouth and lesser mixed estuaries, mixed witness circles gather at reed-shelves, tide stones, and channel posts. Thaluren run-witnesses declare protected ascent windows and recognized return channels; Gaugeward pilots sound declared channels and keep hazard markers; a fishing passage is not treated as a return run, and a return run is not treated as coastal traffic.
-
The ascent channels. Above the mouths, run-witnesses and Sanctuary Custodians keep the recognized channels to the spawning grounds. Since the closure the best known leads to The Second Channel, the first alternate spawning water to win provisional standing. Each season its runs send witnesses to the Naming Reach, the watched water below the closed confluence, to name the old water and the debt it is owed.
-
The braids and holding pools. Where redirected runs must pass near Kavari nurseries, cold holding pools keep displaced clutches alive while custody circles decide what the water can bear.
-
The down-run. The young come back to the sea by the same rivers, without ceremony, and are counted when they reach the Kelpshade.
Trade is slight. Courtesy goods pass at the custody circles and the mouths, and Gnome coastal traffic uses the estuaries for its own purposes, but no one comes to the Reaches to buy. Passage is kept by function: run-witnesses decide whether an ascent is lawful, Sanctuary Custodians whether a spawning water can receive it, Kavari nursery custodians whether their channels can bear it, and at the mouths Gnome pilots whether a channel is safe to approach at all.
Historical Memory
The Reaches remember one wound and the laws that grew around it. Long before outsiders came, sea-to-river return was already custom, and the Returning Concord grew from that custom as run recognition and sanctuary authority hardened. Upriver, the Kavari were drawing their own bank councils together into the Bankright Circles in The Consolidation of the Bankright Circles (c. 190,000-c. 160,000 BR), without reference to anyone’s return.
Then the First Nesting Confluence failed. Its closure forced the Thaluren to ask whether sanctity lay in a place or in a pattern of witnessed care, and split the Concord’s answer into custody and open run. The Second-Channel Recognition Dispute (c. 160,000-c. 156,000 BR) gave the split its first law: an alternate water may gain provisional standing only while it carries memory-debt toward the damaged source. The Gravel Oath Accord turned that law outward when a redirected run met Kavari nursery-water, creating the Dual Standing of Waters and the oath-language of burdened return. The Late-Closure Review (c. 147,000-c. 146,000 BR) taught both sides that late notice creates debt even in real emergency, and that broad closure may be questioned without surrendering nursery authority. The Estuary-Witness Terms, finally, made Thaluren return law answerable to a neighbour’s instruments at the mouth.
The Reaches sit squarely on the Water and Custody thread of The Threads of Caeldon History: who may decide about living water. They answer the question of Standing and Record in their own way too, without archives, through witnesses who remember who returned lawfully and when. Blightward families keep sanctity-memory of who guarded the clutches and who kept the waters clean. Open-Run families keep survival-memory of who recognized danger honestly and who let the run move. Kavari households keep their own count of every burdened return that crossed their water and whether its debt was paid.
Tensions in the Reaches:
-
Debt without end. An Open-Run circle has begun arguing at the Naming Reach that the Second Channel has carried its memory-debt for long enough and should now hold full standing. Blightward custodians answer that a debt is not paid by being old. Meanwhile, a custodian reports that one of the still pools near the closed confluence has grown since last season.
-
The expected emergency. Three seasons running, the same Open-Run escort has reached the Gravelbraid braids late with a genuine emergency, and three times it has been granted holding-pool mercy. A Coldrun council upstream has started to close its side channels before anyone asks, and the escort’s witnesses are preparing to challenge the closure under the review custom.
-
A closure that will not say why. At the Split Reed Mouth, Gaugeward pilots want to re-sound a channel the Thaluren have kept under protected ascent for an unusually long time. The run-witnesses have declared the closure, but not whether it protects spawning continuity or contamination risk, and the Terms make that silence an offence of its own.
Belief
Thaluren belief is The Way of Return, the only organized religion on Caeldon with no god at its centre. Its pilgrimage is the run, its holy places are the return-waters, and its keepers are the Concord’s own offices. The Reaches remember why. When blight entered the First Nesting Confluence, the Thaluren prayed to Ulaun the Eternal Now for stillness, and her stillness held their clutches in a water where nothing could hatch. She is faded now, but Blightward custodians keep the still pools where silt hangs unmoving under the same watch as the blight itself. The whale-like deep-witnesses of ocean memory are honoured without being prayed to.
Kavari households keep small shrines to the unnamed water-powers of their own pools and nursery reaches and bury their dead along their burial reaches; no great god speaks for Kavari water, and Kavari custom prefers it so. At the Split Reed Mouth, Gnome pilots bring their own devotion to Maris of the Tides. The Thaluren respect gods in other peoples' waters, provided no one invokes one over the ascent.
