Local Documents
-
The Echo-Mother: the faded god of the Hushvale’s protective quiet, forgotten by the people she taught to forget.
-
Ennor the Grave-Watcher: the widely shared god of the dead, known to many peoples under many names.
-
The Shadow-King: retained for another world; not part of Caeldon canon.
-
Varn the Shadow-Stalker: the god of the hidden and the hunted in the Broken Marches.
The Nature of Umbra Resonants
Resonants of Umbra are the living shadows of the world. They do not merely cast darkness; they embody the principle of the Trace—the imprint left behind when something passes, the echo that lingers after the sound fades, and the space that gives light its shape.
-
The Keeper of the Threshold: Umbra Resonants often act as guides between the living and the dead, the known and the unknown. They are the ones who ensure that the dead are not forgotten and that the living do not trespass where they should not.
-
The Mirror of Absence: They reflect what is missing. In their presence, people feel the weight of their losses, the silence of the departed, and the void left by absence. This can be terrifying, but it is also a form of healing—acknowledging the loss is the first step to moving on.

The Domain Variance:
-
The Grave-Watchers: Born from the need to honor the dead. They guide Echoes and protect burial sites.
-
The Shadow-Stalkers: Born from the need for secrecy or protection. They hide things in the dark, shielding the vulnerable from the light.
-
The Echo-Callers: Born from the need to remember. They help people connect with the "traces" of the past.
-
The Veil-Weavers: Born from the need to separate the living from the dead. They maintain the boundary between worlds.

Current Resonants (Medieval Era)
Each Resonant’s full account lives on its own page; these are summaries.
Ennor the Grave-Watcher (Active / Widespread)
The god of the dead most cradle-web peoples share, each under its own name, guiding Echoes at the threshold of the Veil; condensed over ages of burial rather than from one event.
Varn the Shadow-Stalker (Regional / Active)
The god of the hidden and the hunted in the Broken Marches: fugitive Wrought, unwarranted Goblins, anyone power is looking for.
Faded Resonants
The Echo-Mother (Faded / Medieval Era)
Born c. 1,200 CR from the Hushvale survivors' prayer for concealment as they made the Wake-Seal; she faded because they forgot her, which is what she had taught them, and her name is lost with her.
Unique Mechanics of Umbra Resonants
The Weight of the Trace
Umbra Resonants feel the weight of every "trace" they preserve. If an Echo is lost, they feel the void. If a memory is forgotten, they feel the erosion. This can lead to a state of "shadow-fatigue," where they become heavier, slower, or more withdrawn.
The Cost of the Veil
When an Umbra Resonant maintains the boundary between worlds, they often absorb a portion of the confusion or fear of those who cross it. This can lead to a buildup of "static" within the Resonant, making them seem distant or detached.
The Paradox of Presence
Umbra Resonants are often most powerful when they are absent. Their presence can be felt in the silence, the shadow, the coolness of the air. They are the gods of "what is not there," and their power wanes if they try to be too "present" or "visible."
Relationships with Other Resonants
-
With Lux (Light/Truth): Natural partners and rivals. Light defines shadow; shadow gives light depth. They often clash, but their union creates the "twilight" where most life exists.
-
With Memoria (Memory/History): Close allies. Umbra preserves the trace; Memoria preserves the story. They work together to ensure the dead are not forgotten.
-
With Aion (Time/Duration): Natural partners. Aion moves time forward; Umbra preserves the echo of the past. They work together to ensure the past is not lost.
-
With Imago (Identity/Potential): Natural tension. Imago remakes the self; Umbra keeps the trace of the old one. A Imago Resonant might try to help someone "move on"; an Umbra Resonant will insist they "remember who they were."
