Kerrund the Stone-Warden

Origins and Birth

Kerrund the Stone-Warden was born from the collective fear and determination of a Dwarven hold whose deep gate was besieged during the early Dark Elf-Dwarf conflicts below the Ironspine (c. 330,000-c. 305,000 BR), the struggles whose iconic case is The Heartwell Struggles.

The gate held the only defensible passage in a contested deep corridor, and it was attacked again and again for longer than one generation. Its keepers did not pray for victory; they prayed for survival. They begged for "walls that cannot be breached," for "a foundation that cannot be shaken," and for "a guardian who will never sleep." They were willing to live in stone, eat stone-hard bread, and become as hard as the rock around them if it meant they would not be erased.

When survival required becoming part of the wall itself, Terra’s current hardened into consolidation rather than mercy. Kerrund emerged as immovable resolve, custodian of endurance, fortification, and oath-bound persistence. The prayer spread from that one gate to hold gates across the Ironspine, and his name went with it.

Appearance and Presence

Kerrund appears as a figure of monolithic, weathered strength, radiating the weight of centuries.

  • Visuals: He is a massive figure, nearly eight feet tall, whose skin resembles rough-hewn granite, cracked and weathered by time. Moss and lichen grow in its crevices, giving him a living, ancient look. His hair is a thick mane of grey stone shards that clatter softly when he moves. His eyes are dark pools of obsidian, unblinking and unyielding. He wears armour of blackened iron and stone plates that seem fused to his flesh. He carries no weapon, for his fists and the ground itself are his arms.

  • The Atmosphere: Where he moves, the ground becomes firm and unyielding. Loose gravel compacts to stone. Timber floors creak less. The air feels heavy and pressurized, like the inside of a deep cave. His footsteps are a deep thud felt in the chest.

  • The Voice: His voice sounds like the grinding of millstones: slow, deliberate, and heavy. It does not shout; it declares. He speaks in short, absolute sentences. "Hold." "Stand." "This is the line."

Powers and Abilities

Kerrund does not attack; he defends. He does not change; he preserves.

  • The Unmoving: He can make himself or a structure completely immovable, resisting any force, whether physical, magical, or temporal.

    • Mechanism: He anchors the target to the bedrock of the world, drawing on the planet’s mass.

    • Cost: The target cannot be moved, even by Kerrund himself, until he releases it.

  • The Raise: He can summon walls, towers, or fortifications from the ground in moments.

    • Mechanism: He commands the earth to rise and shape itself into stone.

    • Cost: The stone must come from somewhere. If he raises a wall inside a hold, the floor of a neighbouring hall may sink or crack.

  • The Oath-Bound: He can seal a vow in stone, making it unbreakable. If the vow is broken, the breaker suffers a physical fracture or collapse.

    • Mechanism: He binds the words of the oath to the swearer’s skeleton, making the body itself the contract.

    • Cost: The pain of the broken vow is physical. A liar may find their bones cracking under the weight of their own deceit.

  • The Structural Sense: He can sense the integrity of any building, bridge, or wall, knowing exactly where it will fail.

    • Mechanism: He feels the stress points in the stone as if they were nerves in his own body.

    • Cost: He feels every crack and fracture. A failing hold is a constant agony to him.

Current Status: The Weight of the Walls

Kerrund is active and powerful, but he is increasingly burdened.

  • His Reach: Hold oaths, walls, and gates throughout the Ironspine Holds are sworn under his name. He is the god most widely shared between holds, and the one Ironspine devotion most readily gathers around when it speaks for more than a single hold.

  • The Dilemma: Kerrund is torn between protecting the people and preserving the walls. Gates kept shut too long can wall a hold in with its own decline, and a god of held lines struggles to tell when holding has become hiding.

  • The Loosening: As the roads of the Headwater Marches and corridor exchange draw more hold life outward, some Dwarves pray for open roads and safe passage rather than for held gates. Kerrund feels that pull as a slow thinning of his connection, as the wish to go out grows beside the wish to stay safe.

Relationships with Other Entities

  • With Terra Prime: Kerrund is a faithful expression of Terra’s nature, embodying the Prime’s structure and permanence. He draws deep on its holding strength, and his priests fear it is setting him like mortar: the more of himself he spends on the walls, the less is left for the people inside them.

  • With The Measured Seal (Terra): Kin powers with different temperaments. Both are Dwarven gods of the shut door, but Kerrund holds the line against what comes from outside, while the Seal of the Stonewake deeps weighs whether a closure is necessary and who must answer for it. Kerrund’s worshippers swear to hold; the Seal’s are asked to justify the holding.

  • With Haurûm the Mountain-Father (Terra): Younger kin and sleeping elder. Haurûm held the mountains; Kerrund holds the gates. Ironspine devotion knows the elder only by his title, honours him as an elder of all stone, and leaves the colossal remains of the outer Ironspine undisturbed.

  • With Anvelle the Harvest-Mother (Terra): Respectful rivals. They meet in the Headwater corridors, where Dwarven works and Human fields share the same valleys. Anvelle wants the land to breathe; Kerrund wants it to hold. They clash over whether ground should be paved, walled, or planted.

  • With Serovan the River-King (Aqua): Distant partners and rivals. They meet only where corridor exchange carries Dwarven-built crossings and channels down toward the rivers. Kerrund wants the channel held tight; Serovan wants the current to run, and floods below an over-tight channel are blamed on both.

Legacy and Echoes

Kerrund is a living presence in the Ironspine Holds.

  • The Festival of the First Stone: A yearly rite in which each household lays a single stone on its hold’s walls. If the stone is laid with true intent, it is said, he will strengthen the wall for another year.

  • The Legend of the "Unbroken Gate": The holds tell of the deep gate that gave him birth, breached at last until Kerrund stood in the doorway and refused to move. The attackers could not pass him, and the hold was saved. It is a story of sacrifice and the power of standing firm.

  • The Stone Tablets: In hold archives, the laws of the hold are cut into stone tablets. It is said that if a law is unjust, the stone will crack, and that Kerrund watches over the tablets to keep the law true.

Travel Notes for Mortals

  • Warning: Do not break your oaths. Do not try to climb the walls without permission. Do not disrespect the stone.

  • Observation: If the ground becomes unnaturally firm, or you hear the sound of grinding stone, you may be near Kerrund.

  • Action: Stand firm. Honour your commitments. Respect the boundaries.

  • Goal: If you seek Kerrund’s help, remember: he is a god of defence, not of offence. His gift is a shield, not a sword.
